Have you ever felt like your life needed a 180º turn because everything was falling apart?

I did. And sewing helped me mend it.

Hi! I’m Esther Martínez

Professional fashion pattern maker, certified sewing instructor, and the heart behind Looks and DIY.

Sewing has always been a part of my life. My grandmother and mother sewed at home, and my father used to tell me how my great-grandmother had wedding dress patterns hanging on the walls of her bedroom. And I have inherited it.

I started my blog Looks and DIY in 2015, sharing sewing and DIY tutorials as a passion project.

But it wasn’t until I hit rock bottom that I truly understood the power of a sewing machine.

Stitch by Stitch, Back to Life

My Story

In 2018, I was working at a law firm after finishing my Business Administration degree. It was demanding, unstable, and emotionally exhausting. I was drained, often crying and barely able to eat.

It was a time of deep sadness and despair.

One afternoon, after scrolling endlessly through other people’s lives on my phone, a voice message from a friend changed everything. Her words, her energy, made something click.

I asked for help.

I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidismmy body had collapsed from the stress and mental burnout. What I didn’t know back then was that this would eventually lead to thyroid surgery years later — a moment that would mark the turning point in how I approached life, health, and work.

The prescription? Learn to take care of myself. That became my priority.

So I returned to sewing. But this time, not on rushed weekends. I made it part of my daily ritual — a space of peace and intention, stitch by stitch.

From Hobby to Profession

What started as a personal escape grew into a full creative business. I left the corporate path behind and pursued my true calling: I earned a Higher National Diploma in Pattern Making and Fashion Design, followed by an official teaching certification for vocational education—and never looked back.

In 2021, I was honored with the Extraordinary Award in Fashion Design by the region of Aragón, and in 2022, I became a finalist in the Elle Talent Project, a national fashion contest in Spain (in the magazine I had admired since I was a child!).

After finishing my fashion studies, I started teaching sewing and pattern making at a local academy. What I didn’t expect was the community that blossomed there. When I eventually moved on, some of my students begged me to open my own sewing school — “Wherever you go, we’ll follow!” (Their words still warm my heart today ❤).

At the same time, life began to open doors: I was invited to give a class in my university’s business faculty (marketing and web!). I launched my first sewing course in Spanish, followed by my online academy of sewing and pattern making. New releases soon followed: The Zipperpedia, a comprehensive guide to mastering zippers, and my own line of professional sewing patterns.

I’ve been lucky to collaborate with brands like Pranamat ECO, Colvin, or Firmoo, and to be featured in events like Feria Creativa. But what I value most is the growing global community that’s trusted my patterns and courses — more than 500 students and sewing lovers who remind me that creativity is connection.

Over these 10+ years teaching worldwide, I’ve learned this work isn’t just about clothes.

It’s about building a space where women feel seen, capable, and powerful.

Hard work pays off

Just a few things more about me:

  ✽ I’m from Zaragoza, Spain.

✽ I stopped buying fast fashion years ago. I prefer vintage, second-hand, or handmade.

✽ Nature recharges me — hiking to a mountain lake, picking mushrooms in autumn… I love it all.

✽ I believe in mending, reusing and transforming rather than throwing things away.

✽ I’m endlessly curious and always learning. I’m like a sponge — I love soaking up knowledge to grow both personally and professionally. My boyfriend says I basically live outside the comfort zone.

✽ I have an adventurous streak. Traveling and discovering new ways of living — especially through food — fascinates me.

I’m a Christmas lover — it’s a magical time of year and the perfect excuse to enjoy cooking and hosting.

Here, sewing is more than making clothes — it’s about reconnecting with yourself.

If you’ve read this far, chances are you’re not just curious about sewing — you’re ready to reconnect with your creativity and build something that feels truly yours.
